Newsweek's Lorraine Ali covered the Iraqi Diaspora in Newsweek in February of 2007 by documenting the plight of her own family following the U.S. invasion of Baghdad. Many of Lorraine Ali's relatives fled Iraq and were residing in countries such as Syria and Amman—both regions with high concentrations of displaced Iraqis. The first-person essay uncovered the human toll of war, as well as the personal responsibility writer Lorraine Ali felt when it came to trying to help her relatives. Lorraine Ali's story was one of the few personal takes in the mainstream media regarding the Iraqi refugee crisis.
